How to play
The One is a daily Bible game. Each day brings a new flock of 7 prompts, the same for every player. Each prompt asks you to name something from Scripture, and you have 30 seconds to answer it. Any correct answer counts, but the point is to think of the one most players won't.
A round
- Press Start and the first prompt appears with its clock running.
- Type an answer and press Enter. A wrong guess costs nothing but time, so keep trying until the clock runs out.
- If you're close, the game asks did you mean and offers the name it thinks you meant. Submit it as it is to take the suggestion, or keep typing.
- When you get one right, your lamb runs out across the pasture. Press Keep grazing when you're ready for the next prompt; its clock only starts when you press.
- If the clock runs out first, that prompt scores nothing and the lamb stays by the fold.
Scoring
Every accepted answer has a rarity: roughly, what share of players give it. The rarer the answer, the farther your lamb runs, measured in cubits. Your score for the day is the total distance across all 7 prompts.
- Common 10–35 cubits
- Uncommon 40–110 cubits
- Rare 120–290 cubits
- Very rare 300–480 cubits
- The One 500–650 cubits
The One is the rarest answer a prompt accepts, as long as it is truly rare. The name comes from the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15, where the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to go after the one that wandered.
Scores are fixed for the whole day, so two players who give the same answer hours apart score the same. A brand-new prompt starts from how familiar each answer is, judged by how often it appears in the Bible. Each night the rarities are updated from what players actually answered, so they get more accurate the more a prompt is played.
Landmarks
As your total grows, your lamb passes landmarks, so you can tell at a glance how good a day it was: the well (150), the olive grove (450), the city gate (900), the Jordan River (1,500), and the star over Bethlehem (2,400).
After the last prompt
- Your total, the landmark your lamb reached, and a grid of tiers you can share without spoiling the answers.
- How the rest of the flock scored, once enough people have played, and how many gave each of your answers.
- Every answer each prompt accepted, rarest first, with its verse reference and a short note.
- Your streak, best streak and average across every day you've played.
Tips
- Skip the first name that comes to mind. If it came to you instantly, it probably came to everyone else too.
- Think in places in the text, not lists you memorised: the minor characters in a familiar story, a name in a genealogy, a king mentioned once in Chronicles.
- Keep a safe answer in your back pocket. A common answer scores something, and an empty prompt scores nothing.
- Read the answer key after each day. The rare answers you didn't think of are the ones you'll remember next time.
Questions
- Which Bible does it use?
- Verses are shown from the Berean Standard Bible. Older spellings from the King James and Douay-Rheims also count, so Elias scores as Elijah.
- I gave a right answer and it didn't count.
- On the results page, tap the Should it have counted? link under that prompt. Reports are reviewed by hand, and answers that should count are added to the prompt.
- When does a new flock start?
- At midnight UTC. Everyone plays the same flock on the same day.
- Can I play a day I missed?
- Yes. Every past day is in the archive, with a link to play it. Each archive page also shows that day's answers, so play first if you don't want them spoiled.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Your streak is kept in your browser. See Privacy for exactly what is stored.
